O, BRAZEN AGE WORLD PREMIERE IN VANCOUVER!

North Country Cinema’s second feature film, O, Brazen Age, will have its World Premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival later this month! We’re very excited to be returning to VIFF with Alexander Carson’s long-form directorial debut.

O, Brazen Age is part coming-of-age story, part art-cinema meditation on photography, memory, and souvenirs. The film creates a tender and haunting portrait of friendship and faith in the 21st century, following a group of Toronto artists in their twenties on a search for new mythologies, invoking a cinematic landscape where classical literature collides with new wave aesthetics and 90’s pastiche.

O, BRAZEN AGE BEGINS PRODUCTION!

We’re very excited to officially announce that North Country Cinema’s second feature film is now in full production. Writer/director Alexander Carson’s film O, Brazen Age has secured financial support from Telefilm Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts, and has recently begun filming in rural Quebec.

Part coming-of-age story, part art-cinema meditation on photography, souvenirs, and collections, O, Brazen Age creates a tender and haunting portrait of friendship and faith in the 21st century. The film follows a group of Toronto artists in their twenties on a search for new mythologies, invoking a cinematic landscape where classical music and literature collide with new wave aesthetics and 90’s pastiche.

O, Brazen Age is produced by Jeff Hanes, Alexander Carson, and Kyle Thomas at North Country Cinema. The film is currently targeted for festival release in 2015, and a broader release the following year. More news soon!

PRODUCTION WRAP ON THE VALLEY BELOW!

Our second block of filming on North Country Cinema’s first feature film, The Valley Below, by writer/director Kyle Thomas, has finally wrapped! Post-production is now underway as we work toward a multi-platform release for the film in 2014. We’re thrilled with the fantastic performances from our amazing cast, and the beautiful sounds and images captured by our intrepid crew. We would like to thank the town of Drumheller and all the wonderful people in the valley and surrounding areas who helped make this production fun, smooth, and creatively rewarding. Many thanks also to Telefilm Canada, without whom the financing of this production would not have been possible.

THE VALLEY BELOW – FIRST SHOOT!

The shoot has begun! So far we’ve wrapped two amazing days on Kyle Thomas’ first feature film, The Valley Below (formerly Down In The Valley), now filming in Drumheller, Alberta. Amazing photos, news, and video are available on the film’s official website, with updates coming daily. Told through a series of interweaving stories, The Valley Below chronicles the life of a small town over one year.

This project is being produced by NCC’s Alexander Carson and Cameron Macgowan with the generous support of Telefilm Canada, and is targeted for a multi-platform release in 2014. These set photographs feature Calgary musician and poet laureate Kris Demeanor as Warren, reprising his role from Kyle’s award-winning 2011 film Not Far From The Abattoir. TVB’s Facebook page will also feature regular updates on all the latest. More soon!

North Country Cinema’s upcoming production of Kyle Thomas’ first feature film The Valley Below (formerly Down In The Valley) now has its own website! More info and news about the project will be posted here on a regular basis. The Valley Below is a dramatic feature film set in the badlands of central Alberta. Told through a series of interweaving stories, this film chronicles the life of a small town over the course of one year. We are very excited to be commencing production in less than one month!

Kyle Thomas has spent the past week in Cannes in support of his new short film The Post (2013), screening at Telefilm Canada’s Not Short on Talent Program. He has also been journaling for the Huffington Post, writing dispatches from the perspective of an emerging Canadian filmmaker navigating the world’s biggest film festival, market, and media circus. THE POST AT CANNES 2013!

Very excited to announce that Kyle Thomas’ new film The Post will screen at the Cannes Film Market 2013 as part of Telefilm Canada’s Not Short on Talent showcase. We are very grateful to Telefilm for representing our new work at the world’s most important film market in consecutive years. Building upon our positive experiences showing Not Far From The Abattoir and “We Refuse To Be Cold” at Cannes 2012, Kyle Thomas will return to France to rep North Country Cinema and The Post in May 2013.

DOWN IN THE VALLEY RECEIVES TELEFILM SUPPORT!

We are thrilled to announce that North Country Cinema will be commencing work on our first feature-length production later this year! Kyle Thomas’ project, Down in the Valley, has been awarded financial support through Telefilm Canada’s Micro-Budget Production Program. Down in the Valley is a multi-narrative portrait of love, longing, and loss, set in the haunting badlands of central Alberta. This project will re-team Kyle Thomas as writer/director/producer with Cameron Macgowan and Alexander Carson as producers. We are very grateful to the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers and Telefilm Canada for supporting us as we venture into long-form dramatic work. Exciting! More news soon…

NORTH COUNTRY CINEMA GOES TO CANNES!

We’re very excited to announce that Telefilm Canada will be presenting BOTH of North Country Cinema’s 2011 films at Cannes this year. Alexander Carson’s “We Refuse To Be Cold” and Kyle Thomas’ Not Far From The Abattoir have both been selected for the Not Short On Talent section of Telefilm’s Perspective Canada screenings on May 22 and May 23 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

Kyle, Sandy, and Cameron Macgowan will all be traveling to the south of France to proudly rep these films at the world’s most important film event, and to take in some of what the coming year holds for international cinema. This will be a great opportunity for North Country Cinema to share our work with new audiences, and to make connections within the international film community that will help us grow in the future. Many thanks again to all those who helped make these projects such successes!
