NFFTA AT CLERMONT-FERRAND CANADIAN RETROSPECTIVE 2019

Kyle Thomas’ 2011 short film Not Far From The Abattoir has been selected for a retrospective screening of important Canadian works at the world’s most prestigious short film festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France in February 2019.

A classic from the early days of North Country Cinema, Not Far From The Abattoir was written and directed by Kyle Thomas, produced by Thomas and Cameron Macgowan, with cinematography by Alexander Carson. The project also features collaborations with many NCC regulars, including Sara Corry as production manager, Bobby Vanonen as production designer, and Alex Mitchell as sound recordist. We’re honoured to have this film featured at Clermont-Ferrand alongside so many great works by visionary Canadian filmmakers from across the country on a major international stage.

THE NEW CANADA ON CBC

Alexander Carson’s 2016 short film The New Canada was recently acquired by CBC for broadcast and digital distribution. You can now see it online here

The New Canada is a meditation on friendship, place, and possibility, as Sal, a woman in her twenties, travels home to Toronto after a visit with her brother in Buffalo, NY. It’s a tale of two cities, two countries, and two versions of Sal, as she contemplates her past and future at a tipping point.

The New Canada was first aired on CBC television as part of Canadian Reflections on September 10, 2017.

We’re pleased to announce that O, Brazen Age is an awards finalist at the Blow-Up Chicago International Arthouse Film Festival 2016. Alexander Carson and Mike McLaughlin received nominations for Best Director and Best Cinematographer, respectively. We’re very grateful for being recognized by a festival truly committed to an art-cinema tradition, taking place Nov 18-20 at the Logan Centre for the Arts at the University of Chicago.

We’re looking forward to showing Alexander Carson’s new short film The New Canada at the 10th annual Buffalo International Film Festival in October, 2016. Partly filmed in Buffalo NY, The New Canada is a tale of two cities, two countries, and two versions of Sal (Norah Sadava), as she contemplates her past and future at a tipping point.

Screening at the North Park Theatre on Sunday Oct 9 at 4:30 pm, The New Canada will be presented as part of a program of short films with a local connection to Western New York. We’re excited and honoured to be part of this program, and can’t wait to see the other great work being shown at BIFF X this year.

The Valley Below will have its American Premiere at the Roving Eye Film Festival, a division of the Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival on April 15, 2016 at 6:00 pm at Roger Williams University. Following our successful presentation at the Reykjavik International Film Festival in 2015, O, Brazen Age returns to Iceland for short run at Bio Paradis. The film screens for the night, from April 7-9, and we’re very grateful to the Reykjavik media for all the Icelandic coverage of the film, as well as this great article in the Reykjavik Grapevine by Mark Asch.

O, Brazen Age marks writer/director Alexander Carson’s feature-length debut, as well as his latest collaboration with Icelandic performer Atli Bollason as part of the film’s memorable ensemble cast.
